Stephen Curry Just Changed His Approach to Recruiting LeBron. That Might Mean Something.

Stephen Curry has never been the guy to publicly stump for free agents. That’s just not how he operates. He lets his game do the talking, stays in his lane, and lets the front office handle the messy business of roster construction. But this time feels different. And according to people who have watched him for years, it’s a notable shift.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin was on the Rich Eisen Show recently and laid out what he’s been hearing from Curry’s inner circle. The short version? Curry is more involved in the LeBron James recruitment than he has ever been in any previous free agency pitch for the Warriors.

“Speaking to people who have covered Steph for a long time, they said over the last few weeks the way Steph has handled this is a complete departure of how he’s been willingly involving himself in free agency pursuits by the Golden State organization in the past,” McMenamin said. “To me, there’s some sort of indicator that there’s true interest, obviously, in Steph joining up with LeBron. Probably because he feels that there’s some sort of chance of it happening.”

Curry’s pitch was casual but calculated

Curry went on Good Morning America recently and made his case directly to LeBron. He didn’t overthink it. He just listed what the Bay Area offers and let it hang there.

“The Bay, we know how to win, beautiful weather, great golf… we just know how to play basketball, and I think that he would enjoy just the idea of what it means to finish your career the right way,” Curry said. “He knows what he wants, and he’ll eventually make that decision; it’s solely up to him. We’re having fun with it knowing he’s got his pick of the entire league.”

That’s not a hard sell. But it’s also not nothing. Curry mentioning golf specifically is a nice touch considering LeBron’s known love for the game. And Curry framing it around finishing a career the right way? That’s a softer, more thoughtful pitch than just saying “come win rings.”

Draymond Green already made his move

Draymond Green has been open about working his own recruitment angle too. He and LeBron have that mutual respect turned friendship from their Finals battles and Olympics stints. Draymond doing the talking is expected. Curry stepping into that role is what makes this worth watching.

The Warriors have to believe they have a real shot here. Otherwise why would Curry bother? He’s not the type to waste energy on something he thinks is dead on arrival. The fact that he’s out there selling the Bay to LeBron — on national television, no less — suggests the team sees a genuine opening.

Nobody knows when LeBron will actually make a decision. He could drag this out or he could call Kerr tomorrow. But the Warriors did their part. They put Curry on the front line, and he showed up.
