Spurs Rookie’s Knee Surgery Could Keep Him Out Until 2027, Multiple Teams Feared Worse

The San Antonio Spurs knew what they were getting into. The question now is whether Jayden Quaintance will play a single NBA game before 2027.

The 19-year-old first-round pick underwent surgery on his right knee this week, and a report from The Athletic’s Jared Weiss suggests the recovery could stretch well beyond what the team has publicly acknowledged. Multiple league sources told The Athletic that several teams had Quaintance ranked near the bottom of the first round precisely because they expected him to miss most or all of his rookie season.

Quaintance, taken No. 20 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, played just four games at Kentucky last year before his meniscus gave out. He admitted on draft night that a follow-up surgery was coming. Now it has, and the Spurs are staying quiet on the timetable.

“Multiple teams that evaluated Quaintance before the draft anticipated he would need a surgery that could hold him out for most of his rookie season,” Weiss wrote, citing anonymous league sources. “They ranked Quaintance at the bottom of the first round because of that possibility.”

Summer League Already a No-Go

Whatever slim hopes existed for Quaintance to play in Summer League evaporated after the team’s first practice. Spurs Summer League head coach Corliss Williamson was blunt.

“He’s not playing.”

Williamson added that Quaintance has handled the setback professionally: “He’s here, he’s engaged, he’s at every practice. Good young man. Like his talent and look forward to seeing him for some years.”

The Spurs have taken the same cautious approach since draft night. General manager Brian Wright wouldn’t even commit to Quaintance playing in Summer League before it started, offering a wait-and-see response. That turned out to be prescient.

One source told The Athletic that Quaintance looked terrific in individual workouts despite being unable to fully extend his injured right leg. That raw talent with imperfect mechanics is essentially what San Antonio bet on — a player who looked great in controlled environments but couldn’t show what he could do in full-court action.

For a franchise in the middle of a rebuild that’s been protracted even by Spurs standards, losing a full season from a lottery-range first-round pick stings. But the organization clearly went into this with eyes wide open. They didn’t just draft a teenager who might need time to develop. They drafted a teenager who might need time to walk before he can run.

The 2027-28 season now looks like the realistic target for Quaintance’s actual NBA debut. That’s not speculation from the team — it’s the math other teams did before the draft. The question is whether that math turns out to be pessimistic or right on the money.
