The Atlanta Braves have a problem. It’s not a bad roster — on paper, this is a team built to win a World Series. But paper doesn’t throw 95 mph fastballs or hit cleanup. And right now, the Braves are dealing with a health situation that could define their entire season.
Spencer Strider is out. Ronald Acuña Jr. is out. Michael Harris II is banged up. Sean Murphy is on the IL. That’s two superstars and two key contributors, all missing at the same time. And the trade deadline is still weeks away.
According to The Athletic, the Braves have two glaring needs heading into the deadline: starting pitching and another bat. And after Strider’s injury, the pitching need jumped to the front of the line.
They Need Another Arm
Chris Sale has been solid when healthy. Bryce Elder and Grant Holmes can eat innings. But without Strider, that rotation doesn’t scare anyone in October. The Braves need at least one more proven starter — someone who can take the ball in a postseason game and give them six strong innings. This isn’t a luxury pickup. It’s a necessity.
The front office knows it. The fanbase knows it. Every other contender knows it too, which means the asking price for available arms will be high. But Atlanta has prospects and a willingness to deal. Don’t be surprised if they make a move sooner rather than later.
And a Bat Would Help Too
The secondary need is a hitter, and the obvious spots are left field and shortstop. Ha-Seong Kim hasn’t hit much this year, and while he’s a defensive-first guy, the Braves need more production from that position. Mauricio Dubón can play anywhere but he’s not a long-term solution at short.
One name floating around is CJ Abrams. He’s young, athletic, and has the kind of pop that would play well in Atlanta’s lineup. If the Braves could land him, it would be a massive upgrade. But that kind of trade doesn’t come cheap, and the Nationals might not want to deal him within the division.
At the end of the day, the Braves are still the 2021 champs. They know how to win. But the clock is ticking, and the roster needs help now — not in August, not in September. The deadline will tell us everything about how serious Atlanta is about running it back.
