The soccer world is in mourning after Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder for South Africa’s national team and Mamelodi Sundowns, passed away suddenly just days after the country’s World Cup run ended.
Adams played three matches at the 2026 tournament in North America, including a start against Mexico in the opener. He was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that made history by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time before falling to co-host Canada.
Details surrounding his death have not been released. The South African Football Players Union confirmed the news in a statement that described the loss as devastating.
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction,” the union said. “His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.”
A Rising Career Cut Short
Adams came up through the academy at Stellenbosch FC before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. He had nine caps for the national team and scored two goals. At the World Cup, he came off the bench against the Czech Republic and South Korea after starting against Mexico.
His club season ended on a high note. Adams helped Sundowns win the CAF Champions League final against Moroccan side AS FAR. He scored a goal in that tournament and was becoming a regular contributor in midfield.
Born in Cape Town, Adams was known for his discipline and quiet professionalism. But those close to him knew he had been carrying something heavy.
Playing Through Grief
Two weeks before his death, Adams lost his grandmother, Marianna Adams. The South African FA confirmed she passed away just hours before Bafana Bafana’s World Cup group stage match against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. Adams played in that game. He was substituted in the second half and appeared unusually subdued on the bench.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, said he noticed something was off that day.
“I recall noting how unusually quiet Jayden seemed on the bench in the second half, after he had been substituted. It was only afterwards that we learnt he had taken to the field that day carrying the fresh grief of losing his grandmother,” McKenzie said. “South Africa has lost one of its brightest young talents.”
The union extended condolences to Adams’ family, Sundowns, Stellenbosch, and his national team teammates. No funeral arrangements have been announced. Adams was 25 years old.
