Shane Pinto Says Tkachuk Trade Caught Senators by Surprise. Here’s Why That’s Hard to Believe.

You could hear the genuine disappointment in Shane Pinto’s voice. When Claire Hanna from TSN asked him about the Brady Tkachuk trade to Florida, the Senators center didn’t sugarcoat it.

“Took everyone kinda by surprise. He’s been such a big part of this organization – obviously the face of it. He’s obviously one of my good buds, too, so to see him go, it sucks,” Pinto said.

And yeah. It sucks. But calling this trade a surprise? That’s where things get interesting. Because the writing wasn’t exactly invisible on the wall. It was more like neon graffiti.

The Locker Room Wasn’t Exactly Quiet

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported late last season that the Tkachuk brothers’ podcast had created friction inside the Senators’ room. Not full mutiny or anything dramatic like that. But enough tension that people around the team weren’t shocked when Ottawa finally moved their captain.

So when Pinto says the deal caught everyone off guard, you have to wonder — was he genuinely not paying attention, or is that just the polite teammate answer? Probably the latter. You don’t throw your buddy under the bus on his way out the door.

The Price Ottawa Got

The Senators walked away with multiple first-round picks for Tkachuk. One of those picks went to San Jose for William Eklund, a young Swedish forward who suddenly has enormous shoes to fill. The team hasn’t named a captain for next season. They’ve made two straight playoff appearances and finally looked like they were trending up. Then they traded their captain. That’s a weird look for a team trying to convince its fanbase it’s serious about winning.

Florida didn’t make the playoffs last year. They immediately turned around and landed Tkachuk, pairing him with his brother Matthew. The Panthers saw an opportunity and grabbed it.

Could These Two Meet in the Playoffs?

First round. Senators vs. Panthers. Brady Tkachuk’s first series against his old team. The story practically writes itself. Revenge. Emotion. A whole lot of subplots that would keep Sportsnet busy for weeks.

Or maybe Ottawa takes a step back. Trading your best player — even if the return is solid — usually leaves a hole that takes more than one offseason to fill. The Senators have questions. Their captain is gone. Their identity is suddenly unclear. And the Panthers just got bigger and meaner.
