Shane Bieber Gets a Return Date and the Blue Jays Need Him Badly

Shane Bieber will be back on a big league mound Monday night. The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander is set to start against the Houston Astros, with manager John Schneider confirming the news before Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. Bieber cleared the last hurdle by finishing a bullpen session, and now the two-time All-Star is ready to pitch in the majors for the first time this season.

The 31-year-old has been sidelined since spring training with right elbow inflammation. That was just the latest chapter in a long recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in April 2024. That procedure wiped out his 2024 season and kept him out until late in 2025. The Blue Jays acquired him from the Cleveland Guardians at last year’s trade deadline, and he joined the rotation in August.

In seven regular-season starts for Toronto last year, Bieber went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. He held hitters to a .225 average over 40.1 innings. Then came the playoffs. He made five appearances — four starts — and posted a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA across 18.2 innings. The Blue Jays pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to Game 7 of the World Series before losing in extra innings. Bieber was a big reason they got that far.

Rehab numbers weren’t pretty, but the stuff is there

Bieber made five rehab starts across three minor-league affiliates after starting his assignment in late May. The numbers aren’t great: a 6.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 17 innings, with 14 strikeouts and five walks. But his most recent outing looked more like the real Bieber. He threw 80 pitches across five innings, which suggests he’s ready to handle a normal workload right away.

The Blue Jays rotation has been absolutely wrecked by injuries this year. Jose Berrios is done for the season after Tommy John surgery. Cody Ponce tore his ACL. Max Scherzer just went back on the injured list with back spasms. So Bieber isn’t walking into a fully healthy staff. He’s walking into a group that desperately needs a stabilizer.

Toronto sits at 37-39 heading into Saturday, just one game back of the final American League Wild Card spot. The timing of this return could hardly be better. The rotation right now features Dylan Cease, Patrick Corbin, Trey Yesavage, and Kevin Gausman. That’s not a bad group, but adding a former Cy Young winner to the mix changes the math.

Bieber owns a 3.24 career ERA over eight big league seasons. He won the AL Cy Young in 2020. The stuff has always been there. The question is whether he can find his old form quickly enough to help a team that’s hanging around the playoff picture but hasn’t proven it can stay there.
