Seahawks Corner Devon Witherspoon Expected to Cash In Before Patriots’ Christian Gonzalez

The NFL cornerback market is about to get blown up again. And based on the early read from league insiders, Devon Witherspoon might be the one to pull the trigger first.

Trent McDuffie reset the bar earlier this offseason when he landed a $31 million per year extension after his trade to the Rams. That deal made him the highest-paid corner in football — for now. But two other young stars at the position are extension-eligible in 2026, and neither one is likely to settle for anything less than what McDuffie got.

Witherspoon of the Seahawks and the Patriots’ Christian Gonzalez are the names everyone is watching. Both players came into the league and hit the ground running. And according to NFL insider Albert Breer, Witherspoon has the edge in timing.

“It’s fair to expect that Gonzalez and Witherspoon have no reason to accept $31.1 million per year in light of all that,” Breer wrote recently. “The question then becomes how big a jump is coming? And the dynamics at play point to Witherspoon going first, after the two faced off in the Super Bowl.”

Two Different Styles, Same Elite Level

Witherspoon isn’t your typical shutdown corner. Mike Macdonald uses him all over the field. He blitzes. He covers slot receivers. He plays outside. The guy is a missile in run support and sets a physical tone for Seattle’s defense. That versatility is rare, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that drives up a player’s value in negotiations.

Gonzalez is more of a pure coverage guy. Long, smooth, athletic. He shadows No. 1 receivers and makes their lives miserable. The Oregon product is the kind of player you can line up on an island and forget about. That traditional skill set has its own kind of premium.

If Witherspoon signs his extension first, Gonzalez almost certainly plays the 2026 season as the highest-paid corner in the league. That’s just how these dominoes fall when the market is reset twice inside of a year.

Both guys are under 25. Both are already All-Pro caliber. And both are going to get paid like it. The only question is who blinks first. Right now, all signs point to Seattle.
