Samuel Basallo Hits IL for First Time as Orioles Injury List Grows

A week after losing All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman to wrist inflammation, the team announced another promising young player is heading to the shelf. Samuel Basallo, the 20-year-old catching prospect who’s been turning heads all spring, was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

This is Basallo’s first career IL stint. The timing isn’t ideal for a team that’s already thin behind the plate and trying to hold off a tight AL East race.

Another blow behind the dish

Rutschman went down with left wrist inflammation a week ago, which left the Orioles scrambling for catching depth. Now Basallo joins him, and the organization’s depth chart behind the plate looks suddenly thin. The team called up some reinforcements from Triple-A Norfolk, but nobody’s pretending this is how they drew it up.

Basallo was in the middle of a breakout spring. He’d been splitting time between catcher, first base, and DH, showing off the kind of raw power and arm strength that’s made him one of baseball’s top prospects. Scouts have raved about his bat speed and his ability to handle a pitching staff. The Orioles were hoping he might force his way into the everyday lineup by midseason. Now they’ll have to wait.

What’s next for the Orioles

The team hasn’t said how long Basallo might be out, but shoulder inflammation can be tricky. Some guys bounce back in two weeks. Others end up missing a month. The Orioles are probably being cautious here, given his age and long-term value. No sense rushing a kid with his ceiling.
