Russell Westbrook to Miami. But Only if LeBron Stays Away.

The Miami Heat are in the middle of one of those offseasons where every rumor sounds like a fever dream. LeBron James might come back. Giannis Antetokounmpo might get traded there. And now, according to a league source, Russell Westbrook is a candidate to join the Heat. But here’s the twist. If LeBron actually signs in Miami, Westbrook is out.

Stefan Bondy of The New York Post was the first to report the catch. Westbrook, 37, is a diminished version of the player who won MVP in 2017. But he’s still good enough to start for a lot of teams. Last season with the Sacramento Kings, he averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds. He shot 42.7 percent from the floor and 33.8 percent from three. Not great. Not terrible. Just Westbrook at this stage of his career.

The Heat need guard depth. They need someone who can create shots when Jimmy Butler sits. They need a veteran presence in a locker room that’s been through a lot of playoff wars. Westbrook checks those boxes. But the fit with James? We saw that in L.A. It didn’t work. They won 33 games in 2021-22 and finished 11th in the West. That experiment lasted about a season and a half before the Lakers shipped Westbrook to Utah.

So the question for Miami is pretty simple. Do you want LeBron or Westbrook? Because the reporting suggests you can’t have both.

LeBron, meanwhile, is doing the free agency thing with Cleveland, Philadelphia and Miami all reportedly in the mix. He’s 40 years old and still averaging 25 points a game. He’s also a guy who wants to win now. The Heat can offer that. They have a culture. They have Spoelstra. They have Butler. But they don’t have a lot of cap space unless they move some pieces.

Westbrook is probably a cheaper option. Smaller risk. Lower ceiling. But if the Heat miss on LeBron, Westbrook gives them a playmaker who can run the second unit or even start if necessary. He’s not the shooter Miami really needs, but he’s a guy who attacks the rim and pushes the pace. That fits the Heat’s identity.

It’s still unclear if any of this actually happens. The Heat have been linked to every star in the league at some point. Westbrook might just be the latest name to float around until something real materializes. But the detail that his arrival depends on LeBron’s decision? That gives the whole thing some actual texture.

Westbrook and James didn’t work in L.A. Miami knows that. So does Westbrook. The question is whether the Heat think he’s worth it on his own.
