The Braves got some bad news just before their weekend series in San Francisco. Robert Suarez is heading to the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, and the timing couldn’t be much worse for a team that’s been leaning hard on its bullpen.
Atlanta announced the move Friday, backdated to June 23, and recalled right-hander Hurston Waldrep from Triple-A to take his spot on the active roster. The club also outrighted veteran Carlos Carrasco to Gwinnett, and Carrasco promptly elected free agency instead of reporting.
Suarez has been absurdly good this season. Through 32 innings, the 35-year-old righty owns a 0.56 ERA and a 0.844 WHIP, with 26 strikeouts and four saves. Those are career-best numbers across the board. He’s been the bridge between the starter and Raisel Iglesias, and losing that kind of stability in the seventh and eighth innings is a real problem.
Who steps up now?
The Braves don’t have an obvious direct replacement sitting in the bullpen. Dylan Lee has been effective in spots and could see more high-leverage work. Rookie Diddier Fuentes has shown flashes and might get a longer look in tight games. But neither has Suarez’s track record this season, and the front office knows it.
Atlanta is sitting in first place in the NL East, but the division is tighter than it looks. The Mets and Phillies are both lurking, and every win matters. A bullpen that was a strength suddenly has a hole in it.
This injury could push the Braves to act earlier than planned at the trade deadline. The front office was already kicking tires on relievers around the league. Now there’s more urgency. August 3 is still a ways off, but the rumor mill is going to heat up fast.
Suarez has been a solid setup man over five years in the majors, but this is the kind of injury that can linger if not handled carefully. Elbow inflammation is never a one-week thing. The Braves backdated the IL stint to June 23, so he’s eligible to return in early July, but nothing is guaranteed.
For now, they’ll patch things together. Waldrep gives them an extra arm, but he’s not the same kind of weapon. Atlanta’s bullpen just got a lot less intimidating.
