LeBron James is about to turn 41, and somehow the whole league is still waiting on his call. But the person actually holding the phone is Rich Paul.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that James has told his longtime agent to talk to every interested team out there, gather the options, and come back to him. That’s not how every star handles free agency. Some want to hear the pitches themselves. Some get involved in the sales calls. James is treating this like a final interview round where he only shows up when there’s an offer worth talking about.
Paul appeared on The Pat McAfee Show this week and said he hasn’t actually spoken to James about next season yet. But his phone has been ringing off the hook.
“I can tell you this: There have been incoming calls from every team with the excitement of possibly him playing for them,” Paul said. “At 41 years of age, going on 42, I think that’s something to be extremely proud about.”
Ten to twelve teams and counting
McAfee asked Paul how many teams had reached out. Paul’s answer was blunt: “I would say, without naming names, I would say yeah, about ten or twelve.”
That’s a lot of interest for a player entering his 22nd season. The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat are all expected to make a real push when free agency opens, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. James has history in Cleveland and Miami. Golden State offers something he’s never had: a ready-made superteam where he’s not the center of gravity on offense.
James made this decision after taking time to decompress and reflect at the end of the season, per McMenamin’s reporting. He wants to play meaningful, competitive basketball. That part matters. He’s not chasing a final payday or a farewell tour. He still thinks he can win, and teams are buying it.
The Lakers officially moved on after eight seasons. That part of the story is done. What comes next depends entirely on which pitches Paul brings back to his client.
Paul made one thing clear on McAfee’s show: ignore the noise.
“Believe nothing that’s out there because I haven’t had one conversation with him,” he said.
So nothing has been decided. No leaks. No backchannel deals. Just a lot of teams hoping they get a meeting with the guy who talks to the guy.
