Real Madrid Willing to Listen on Tchouameni as Manchester United Circles

Manchester United spent last summer watching other clubs trigger release clauses while they weighed options. This year they might not have to wait that long.

Aurelien Tchouameni is available. That’s according to multiple reports out of Spain, with Real Madrid prepared to entertain offers for the 26-year-old midfielder. The Athletic was first to flag it, but the chatter has been building for weeks. United need a midfielder after Casemiro left. They need someone who can sit deep and break up play, and Tchouameni fits that profile better than most names on their list.

The French international has two years left on his contract and Madrid are at a decision point. Extend him or cash out. Given their recent track record with midfielders, they usually do the latter before a player’s value drops.

Why Tchouameni might be the one who actually moves

United looked at Mateus Fernandes earlier this summer. That fell apart when Tottenham met his release clause. They’ve been linked with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba again, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has fans inside the club. But Tchouameni is different. He’s already done it at the highest level. He started for France in a World Cup final. He’s played in Champions League knockouts against elite midfields. Michael Carrick knows exactly what he’d be getting if United push for this.

There’s context worth noting here. Real Madrid finished last season with no trophies, two managers, and a dressing room that had its moments. Tchouameni was involved in an argument with Fede Valverde after one match. Valverde is about to become club captain with Dani Carvajal leaving. These things matter when clubs decide who stays and who goes.

Still, Tchouameni was one of the few Madrid players who came out of that mess with any real credit. His absence in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich was noticeable. Madrid’s midfield got run through in that game. When he plays alongside a proper playmaker, he looks like the shield they thought they were getting when they bought him from Monaco.

United have also been linked with Eduardo Camavinga, but sources suggest Tchouameni is the priority. Camavinga is younger and more versatile, but he’s not a pure defensive midfielder. Carrick wants a guy who can sit in front of the back four and let others roam. That’s Tchouameni’s job description.

Nothing is done yet. United haven’t submitted a formal bid. Madrid are waiting to see who blinks first. But the door is open, and that’s more than you could say for most of the names on United’s list this summer.
