Actor Ray Romano is known for his deadpan humor and that unmistakable voice. But on Wednesday, he delivered a monologue that had Jets fans everywhere nodding along — not because he was funny, though he was. Because he was painfully honest.
Speaking with NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Romano didn’t just talk about being a fan of Gang Green. He basically gave a masterclass in what sports masochism looks like. And he did it by citing Albert Einstein. Sort of.
“They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and thinking you’re gonna get a different result,” Romano said. “But if being a Jets fan is inane, we’ll take it.”
He acknowledged the annual ritual. You know the one. Hope springs eternal in July. By November, you’re staring at a 3-14 record and wondering why you didn’t pick a hobby that doesn’t hurt. Romano gets it. He still buys in.
“We don’t give up,” he said. “There’s always hope.”

Fans online were quick to chime in. The comments section under the NFL Network clip was a mix of jokes, therapy sessions, and at least one person who just wrote “Idiot.” Another fan pointed out that the “first stage” of grief is denial. They’re not wrong.
The Geno Smith Redemption Arc
So who’s carrying that hope this time around? The Jets are bringing back a familiar face. Geno Smith, the guy they drafted in the second round back in 2013, is returning after a long tour around the league. He’s played for the Giants, Chargers, Seahawks, and most recently the Raiders, where he led the NFL in interceptions last year — 17 picks in 15 games. Not great.
Still, the bar is on the floor. The Jets won three games in 2025. Winning four would count as progress. The franchise hasn’t won a Super Bowl since 1968. Lombardi Trophy is a museum piece at this point.
Romano isn’t alone in this. There’s a whole ecosystem of Jets fans who have convinced themselves that this time it’ll be different. The fans should be used to the disappointment. But they can’t shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, they’re due.
Classic insanity. And they’ll take it.
