Pulisic Motioned ‘I’m OK’ to His Family — But His Halftime Exit Has Everyone Worried

The United States Men’s National Team walked off the field at SoFi Stadium with a commanding 3-0 lead over Paraguay in their World Cup opener. But the scoreline wasn’t what fans were talking about at halftime.

Christian Pulisic, the team’s captain and most dynamic attacker, did not come out for the second half. Instead, Sebastian Berhalter ran on. And the questions started immediately.

Pulisic had just delivered what might have been his finest half in a USMNT jersey. He assisted two goals, carved open Paraguay’s defense repeatedly, and looked every bit the star Mauricio Pochettino’s system needs him to be. Then, without warning, he was gone.

Fox Sports co-commentator Stu Holden, a former USMNT midfielder himself, didn’t sugarcoat it. “That’s not a tactical substitution,” Holden said on the broadcast. “For your star player, something has to be up.”

The network reported that Pulisic motioned to family and friends in the stands, mouthing the words: “I’m OK.” But for a player who rarely leaves the field voluntarily, the gesture did little to calm the anxiety rippling through the American fanbase.

What the Team Has (and Hasn’t) Said

As of now, the USMNT has not issued an official statement on Pulisic’s condition. The substitution was not announced as injury-related, which has only fueled more speculation. The team has not confirmed whether it was a precautionary move, a fitness concern, or something more serious.

Pochettino, known for being tight-lipped in these situations, has not addressed the media since the halftime change. That silence, in itself, is loud.

Why This Matters Beyond One Game

Pulisic has battled through injuries at crucial moments before — most notably during the 2022 World Cup, where he played through a pelvic issue that visibly limited him in the knockout stages. He’s the engine of this team, the one player who can turn a decent attack into a dangerous one.

If his departure against Paraguay turns out to be precautionary, the US dodges a bullet. If not, the entire trajectory of their World Cup run shifts. Without Pulisic, the margin for error shrinks dramatically.

For now, fans are left watching replays and reading between the lines. Pulisic’s message to his family was reassuring, but actions — and absences — speak louder than silent mouthing when the World Cup is on the line.
