The Houston Astros pulled off an early deadline deal Wednesday, and the headliner on their end is a name you probably remember from the mid-2000s. Jadyn Fielder, the son of former Brewers slugger Prince Fielder, is now in the Astros organization after Houston sent Lance McCullers Jr., minor league lefty Colton Gordon, and cash to Milwaukee.
The McCullers era in Houston is over
This trade closes a serious chapter for the Astros. McCullers spent his entire big league career in Houston, won two World Series rings, and was a key part of those postseason runs. But injuries have been brutal on him lately. The 32-year-old righty went 2-3 with a 6.86 ERA across eight starts in 2026 before landing on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. The Astros needed to clear payroll and get something back before the deadline, and this was the move.
The Brewers announced the deal on X with a full breakdown of what each side got. Bob Nightengale of USA Today confirmed the details and noted the obvious: Jadyn Fielder is the son of Prince Fielder, the guy who mashed 50 homers for Milwaukee back in 2007 and was basically the face of the franchise for years.
What the Astros are getting in Jadyn Fielder
Fielder is a 21-year-old outfielder and second baseman currently playing Class A ball. He signed with the Brewers as an undrafted free agent in 2024 and has been grinding through the low minors. This season at Class A Wilson, he hit .233 with three homers and 23 RBIs across 45 games. Not flashy numbers, but he’s shown a decent on-base approach and has the kind of developmental upside that teams bet on in these mid-level prospects.
His dad’s legacy in Milwaukee adds some emotional weight to the trade, but the front office isn’t collecting memorabilia. They’re adding a left-handed bat with room to grow and, more importantly, they opened up some financial breathing room by moving McCullers’ contract.
For the Brewers, this is about pitching depth. They get an experienced right-hander in McCullers who could bounce back if healthy, plus Gordon — a 27-year-old lefty who posted a 3.69 ERA in 14 appearances for Triple-A Sugar Land this year. Milwaukee basically traded a prospect they signed for free for a shot at stabilizing their rotation.
The Fielder name is back in Houston now, just wearing a different jersey number and playing a different position. Whether Jadyn ever makes the big leagues is still a long ways off, but it’s a cool story for now.
