The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians won’t play ball on Friday night, and it has nothing to do with rain or thunder. The Guardians announced that the series opener at Progressive Field has been postponed because of poor air quality in the Cleveland area. Instead of trying to squeeze it in later, Major League Baseball decided to put player and fan safety first.

The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday. The rescheduled game starts at 1:10 p.m. ET, and the originally scheduled Saturday game will follow at 7:10 p.m. ET. Gates open at noon for the first game and at 5:30 p.m. for the nightcap. Fans will have to clear the park between games, which is standard for split doubleheaders.

A Saturday doubleheader scramble

For Cleveland, this postponement pushes back a home series that matters. The Guardians are fighting for positioning, and now they’ll have to win two in one day. But there’s a silver lining: the extra rest gives them a chance to reset before a packed Saturday.

For the Pirates, it’s a tougher ask. Winning one road game against an American League opponent is hard enough. Winning two on the same day is a real grind. Pittsburgh has to travel, adjust, and stay sharp through a long day at the yard.

The air quality issue came from wildfire smoke drifting into the region, something that has disrupted games in other cities this season as well. It’s not exactly new but it’s still unusual for baseball to adjust schedules based on what’s in the air rather than what’s falling from the sky.

Pitching plans shake out

Pittsburgh is expected to send Braxton Ashcraft to the mound for one of Saturday’s games, likely the second one, keeping him on his regular schedule. Cleveland will go with Gavin Williams in the early game and Joey Cantillo in the nightcap, according to the team’s plans.

Neither club has confirmed the exact assignments yet, but that’s the likely alignment. Both teams have to manage their bullpens carefully with two games in one day.

Friday’s postponement is a reminder that weather is not the only thing that can mess with a baseball schedule. With player safety taking priority, both clubs now shift their focus to an action-packed Saturday doubleheader. The series officially begins then, just later than planned.
