Justin Crawford’s left knee is suddenly a pretty big deal for the Philadelphia Phillies. And not just for the prospect himself.
The 20-year-old outfielder was scratched from the lineup Friday with knee soreness, and while MLB.com reports he’s shown improvement over the last couple days, his return date is still listed as TBD. No one’s sure if he’ll be ready right after the All-Star break.
Here’s why that matters beyond the usual prospect watch: the Phillies need outfield help. Badly. They’ve been linked to trade targets for weeks, and the July 30 deadline is creeping up. Crawford’s health could dictate how aggressive they get.
The team has to decide whether they can rely on him as a depth piece down the stretch or if they need to go out and get somebody more established. If Crawford is banged up and might need time off, that pushes the front office to make a bigger move. If he’s back soon, maybe they patch things up with a rental and ride with what they’ve got.
Crawford has been solid this season: .263 with 12 doubles, two homers, three triples and 12 steals across 88 games. Not elite power, but he gets on base, runs well and plays a decent outfield. The Phillies like him. They’d rather not rush him back, but they also don’t want to waste a playoff push waiting around.
Philadelphia heads into the break at 54-43, sitting second in the NL East. They’re two games behind Atlanta, which is a lot closer than anyone expected a few months back when the Braves jumped out to that big early lead. The division is suddenly interesting again, and the Phillies have a real shot if they make the right moves.
But the Braves aren’t going away. They’re still loaded. So the Phillies can’t afford to be passive at the deadline, and Crawford’s knee is now part of that calculation.
More updates on his status will come out as the team figures it out. For now, it’s one of those situations where a minor injury report might end up shaping a whole trade deadline strategy.
