Penn State just picked up another defensive back for the 2027 class, and this one came straight out of Texas. Three-star cornerback Dhillon McGee announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions on Wednesday, choosing them over SMU and Texas. That’s a pretty big deal for a program that’s been working hard to keep its class together after a couple of recent losses.
McGee is the 22nd player in Penn State’s 2027 class and the third cornerback pledge, joining Kei’Shjuan Telfair from Ohio and Ka’ron Ceaser from New Jersey. His commitment comes at a good time too. The Nittany Lions saw cornerback commits Semajay Robinson and Zachary Gleason Jr. back out earlier this month, so McGee helps fill a need.
Who Is Dhillon McGee?
McGee is from the Dallas area and currently listed at around 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds. According to the 247Sports Composite, he’s the No. 498 prospect in the country, the No. 47 cornerback in the 2027 class, and the No. 67 player in Texas. He’s also ranked as the No. 17 player in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the fourth-best cornerback in that region.
He played last season at Red Oak High School, where he put up 31 tackles, one tackle for loss, and 15 pass breakups. He’ll finish his senior year at DeSoto High School, which has won three of the last four Texas Class 6A state championships and is moving to Class 5A Division I after realignment. So he’ll be playing against top competition.
How Penn State Won Him Over
Penn State cornerbacks coach Terry Smith first offered McGee back in August 2025 and kept at it even as the coaching staff went through changes. Smith built a strong relationship with McGee and his family. McGee visited Penn State multiple times, including an official visit from June 12-14. He also took official visits to SMU (June 5-7) and Texas (June 19-21).
SMU looked like a real threat after that early June visit, and Texas being the in-state school obviously had its pull. But in the end, Penn State’s pitch worked. McGee had 31 scholarship offers total, including Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, TCU, USC, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Baylor, Arkansas, Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas State, Pitt, and West Virginia. So it’s not like he was short on options.
What This Means for Penn State’s Class
With McGee on board, Penn State’s 2027 class now sits at No. 10 nationally according to the 247Sports Team Composite. That’s down from earlier this year when the class climbed as high as No. 4 before the decommitments hit. But still, being in the top 10 this early is solid.
McGee is also a three-sport athlete, running track and playing baseball on top of football. As a freshman, he ran 100-meter times of 10.64 and 10.92 seconds in wind-legal races. That kind of speed translates well to playing cornerback.
So yeah, Penn State got a good one. And they pulled him out of Texas, which isn’t easy to do.
