The New England Patriots have a problem, and it involves a defensive end who hasn’t played a down yet.
Gabe Jacas finally signed his rookie contract on July 25 after months of back-and-forth with the team. The holdup wasn’t about money or playing time. It was about his left knee. According to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe, the contract includes an unusual injury waiver that covers the 2027 and 2028 seasons. If Jacas reinjures that knee, the Patriots can void the guaranteed money in those years.
That’s not something you see every day.
Injury waivers are rare in the NFL, especially for a player who was drafted in the fourth round and never missed a game in college. Jacas played in all 50 games at Illinois, starting 43 of them. He looked fine at the combine in late February. Two AFC teams told Volin they found no sign of a knee injury during Jacas’ medical check there. So what changed? The team hasn’t explained it publicly. But the fact that Jacas was present at training camp on Tuesday — in street clothes, watching from the sideline — tells you everything about where this stands right now.

“The most important thing is that Gabe is here, that we are all on the same page and that we are excited to move forward with Gabe,” Vrabel said. “He, by all accounts, has been working hard and is ready to go, and we will evaluate that here over the next couple of days and be able to acclimate him as quickly as possible.”
Translation: They’re not rushing this.
What happens next for Jacas and the Patriots
The Patriots could ease him into practice over the next week.Or they could decide to hold him out until the preseason games start, giving his knee the longest possible recovery window. Either way, fans should pay attention to how the team handles his workload in August. An injury waiver like this doesn’t get added to a contract for no reason.
Jacas was a productive college player and the Patriots clearly like him. But they also made it clear they’re not betting blindly. That tension — talent versus durability — is going to define his rookie year.
