Patrick Kane Got a Wrigley Field Sign and Chicago Just Feels Right Again

Patrick Kane is coming back to Chicago. The Blackhawks and the future Hall of Famer agreed to a two-year deal Thursday, bringing the franchise’s all-time leading scorer among wingers back to where it all started. And within hours, Wrigley Field — about a mile north of the United Center — lit up its marquee with a simple message: “Welcome home Patrick Kane!”

The Cubs’ home posted a photo of the sign on social media, and it spread fast. Which makes sense. Kane’s return isn’t just a hockey story. It’s a Chicago story.

Kane was the first overall pick in 2007 and broke in that fall as an 18-year-old. He played 1,161 regular-season games for the Blackhawks, third most in franchise history. He scored 446 goals, added 779 assists. Both are top three in team history. His 1,225 points are second all-time, trailing only Stan Mikita.

(And yes, there are a lot of Blackhawks fans who still think Kane should be No. 1. The debate lives on.)

He also won just about everything you can win. Three Stanley Cups. A Conn Smythe. A Hart Trophy. An Art Ross. The Calder as rookie of the year. The Ted Lindsay Award. Nine All-Star games. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer the second he becomes eligible.

When does Kane actually play?

Fans won’t have to wait long to see him back in a Blackhawks sweater. Chicago opens the season September 29 on the road against the Vegas Golden Knights. That’s followed by stops in Utah and Buffalo. Then, on October 6, the home crowd at the United Center gets its moment. The St. Louis Blues come to town, and Kane will skate out to a standing ovation that’s probably going to last a full minute or two.

The Blackhawks are a different team than the one Kane left. Younger. Still rebuilding in some ways. But having a player of his pedigree back in the room changes the vibe. He’s a known winner. Guys watch how he works. Coaches don’t have to guess what they’re getting.

And Wrigley Field — which has hosted hockey before, including the 2025 NHL Winter Classic — clearly wanted to be part of the moment. The sign was up before the ink was dry.
