One Move That Could Save Florida’s Season and It Starts With a Detroit Captain

The Florida Panthers spent last season getting reminded over and over how much they need center depth. Aleksander Barkov went down before the season even tipped off with a serious knee injury. Lost him for the whole year. And suddenly a team that looked like it could run through the East again was scrambling.

The championship window isn’t closed in Sunrise. But that 2025-26 campaign showed some cracks. Which brings us to the obvious question this summer: who can fix it?

Dylan Larkin, that’s who. The Detroit Red Wings captain is the name floating around trade conversations more than any other piece that might actually move. And here’s the part that makes this interesting for Florida. Larkin has a full no-trade clause. He’s 29 years old. His approved list of destinations reportedly includes the Panthers among a small handful of teams. That puts Detroit in a tough spot. They can’t just shop him to the highest bidder. They have to deal with whoever he says yes to.

That dynamic gives Bill Zito an opening he wouldn’t normally have for a player of this caliber.

What Larkin Actually Brings

This isn’t about adding a name for the sake of making a splash. Larkin is a legit two-way center who can drive a scoring line or kill penalties. He can play in any situation and make the guys around him better. The Panthers had to watch their middle-six get exposed without Barkov. Sasha and his brother Aleksander aren’t walking through that door any time soon unless something changes fast.

Larkin gives them insurance and firepower at the same time. He restores the kind of center depth that made this team a Cup threat in the first place.

The Cost of Doing Business

A deal this size doesn’t come cheap. Florida has assets though. Anton Lundell is the guy everyone points to first. He’s a young center who showed real growth filling in during Barkov’s absence. Strong underlying numbers, developing offensive instincts. Detroit would want him in any package. Throw in a talented young winger from the Panthers system with some prime years ahead and a draft pick, and suddenly the Red Wings have real building blocks for a retool.

Detroit is in transition. Moving a franchise cornerstone hurts but getting NHL-ready talent and future assets back is exactly what they need. Larkin wants to win now. Florida wants to win now. The pieces fit on paper.

The real question is whether Bill Zito has the stomach to make that kind of move after a down year. He’s shown he isn’t afraid to swing. This summer might tell us whether the Panthers are reloading for another run or just hoping things work out differently next time around.
