Nolan Arenado walked into Busch Stadium on Monday night as a visitor for the first time in five years. And the Cardinals fans did something that felt both inevitable and genuine. They stood up. They cheered. They didn’t boo the guy who asked out.
This wasn’t some polite golf clap either. The crowd rose when Arenado stepped into the batter’s box for his first at-bat against his old team. The eight-time All-Star had to pause, tip his helmet, and take it in. That kind of reception doesn’t happen by accident, especially not when a player waived a no-trade clause to leave.
Arenado spent the 2021 through 2025 seasons in St. Louis. He won Gold Gloves. He hit. He played third base like the position owed him money. He was the guy who showed up every day and made the Cardinals feel like a contender even when the roster around him started to fray. Alongside Paul Goldschmidt, the 2022 NL MVP, he gave that franchise a legit star presence on the left side of the infield.
But the Cardinals decided this past winter that they needed to get younger. They shifted direction. Arenado had a no-trade clause and he could have blocked any deal. Instead he agreed to go to Arizona. That choice could have soured things. There was no guarantee the farewell tour would be warm.
It was. The ovation said something about how St. Louis treats players who actually produce. Cardinals fans have a reputation for knowing the game and they know what Arenado gave them. Ten Gold Gloves total. Five seasons of elite defense. Multiple All-Star nods. That buys a lot of goodwill even when the parting is mutual and a little weird.
Talkin’ Baseball posted the moment on X. The video shows Arenado acknowledging the crowd before getting back to work. He’s a Diamondback now. He’s trying to help a team that thinks it can win. The Cardinals are running out a younger lineup and seeing what sticks.
For one at-bat though, nobody cared about the standings. Busch Stadium stopped to thank a guy who played third base as well as anyone who ever wore that uniform. That’s not awkward. That’s just sports. Sometimes the goodbye is the best part.
