He just sort of wandered out there. Nnamdi Madubuike, the Baltimore Ravens’ $98 million defensive tackle, slipped onto the practice field Wednesday morning behind running back Derrick Henry. No fanfare. No announcement. Just the big man in a helmet and jersey for the first time in over ten months.
That’s the kind of low-key return that actually means everything for a defense that spent last season trying to fill a hole it couldn’t fill.
Madubuike was activated off the physically unable to perform list after passing his physical. The guy hasn’t taken a live practice rep since Week 2 of the 2025 season, when a severe neck injury ended his year and put his entire career in doubt. He had surgery this past April. Doctors cleared him for 2026 a few months back. Now he’s back on grass with the rest of the team.
What the Ravens Were Missing
Before the injury, Madubuike was turning into one of the most disruptive interior linemen in football. Not just good. Dominant. Across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, he totaled 19.5 sacks and made back-to-back Pro Bowls. His 13-sack breakout in 2023 got him the big contract. In the two games he played last season before going down, he already had two sacks.
The Ravens defense without him was a problem. Not the same unit. Not the same presence in the middle. Opposing offenses could breathe a little easier. That changes now.
Coach Minter Keeping It Real
Head coach Jesse Minter isn’t rushing anything. He told reporters the team will ease Madubuike back with individual drills for now. No team work yet. But just having him out there changes the energy.
“It’s still a process to get ready to play football and that’s something they’re gonna work through this next couple of weeks,” Minter said. “I think everybody has a good feeling about where he’s at and where it’s headed. Super exciting to see that dude out there with his jersey on and his helmet, he looks great.”
The quote says it all. They’re not trying to win training camp. They’re trying to have this guy ready for September. And the simple fact that he’s standing on the practice field is the best sign they could have gotten.
Baltimore’s defensive front has been looking to get its physical edge back. Getting their anchor in the middle is a huge step. The process is just starting, but for a team with Super Bowl expectations, this is the kind of news that makes a locker room breathe a little easier.
