Nikola Jokic Isn’t Going Anywhere. Here’s What the Extension Delay Actually Means.

The internet did what the internet does the second word got out that Nikola Jokic might push back extension talks with the Denver Nuggets. Panic. Trade rumors. Speculation about a superstar quietly eyeing the exit. But if you’ve watched this guy play for the last decade, you already know the reaction was overblown.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype laid it out clearly. Jokic has told people close to the organization that he wants to stay in Denver long term. That’s not a guy hedging his bets. That’s a guy who just happens to be eligible for a bigger contract if he waits one more year. The difference in money is significant enough that any sensible person would wait. It’s not about the roster. It’s about the math.

The Nuggets won a title in 2023, then got bounced in the second round twice and the first round this past season. That decline has people nervous, especially with Denver sitting above the second apron and staring at some tough roster decisions. But Jokic isn’t the type to jump ship the second things get complicated. He’s built different. Literally and figuratively.

What the Nuggets actually need to worry about is the roster around him. They’re reportedly looking at moving some pieces to clear cap space. Christian Braun and Cam Johnson keep coming up in trade talks. Payton Watson is due for an extension, and the front office wants to make that happen. Aaron Gordon’s name has been floated too, though it sounds like the team would rather move Braun or Johnson before they’d deal Gordon.

Jokic waiting until next summer means he’d be eligible for an extra year on top of the extension. That’s a lot of guaranteed money, and in a league where stars change teams every other season, loyalty still counts for something. Denver should take the delay as what it is: a business decision, not a warning sign.

The Nuggets have a window. It’s not closing tomorrow. But they need to make smarter moves this offseason than they did last one. If they can reload around Jokic without gutting the core, there’s no reason to think he’s going anywhere. He’s said as much. Believe him.
