Newcastle Moves in for Ederson After Man United Mystery Exit

Newcastle United is preparing to open talks with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, just weeks after Manchester United suddenly walked away from a deal that was reportedly all but done. The Brazilian international was heading to Old Trafford before his late call-up to the World Cup squad threw a wrench in the timeline. United even ran a second round of medicals after he got back from international duty. Then nothing. The club pulled the plug and told Atalanta they were out.

That’s where Newcastle comes in. The Magpies are sitting on a pile of cash after shipping Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100 million, and they need bodies in the middle of the park. Bruno Guimaraes might be next out the door with Arsenal sniffing around. So the timing works.

Two Different Stories About That Knee

Here’s where it gets a little weird. Reports out of Manchester suggest United backed off because of a minor knee issue that showed up in the medicals. But Atalanta’s board says Ederson is perfectly healthy and they’re ready to offer him a new contract if nobody meets their asking price. He’s got one year left on his current deal in Bergamo.

Newcastle’s recruitment team apparently doesn’t share United’s concerns. They’ve done their own homework and feel good about the player. That tracks with how Eddie Howe has operated before — he’s not afraid to go after guys other clubs get cold feet on.

Midfield Overhaul in Progress

The Magpies already brought in Sean Steur from Ajax, but the Dutch kid is more of a long-term project. They’re still looking at adding at least two more midfielders this summer. Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi is expected to be one of them, so Ederson would slot in as the more experienced piece of the rebuild.

Atalanta coach Maurizio Sarri has said he’s fine keeping Ederson around if a transfer falls through. But the club’s hierarchy is willing to deal at their original valuation, which means Newcastle will probably have to match whatever United was offering. That number hasn’t been made public, but it’s not going to be cheap.

For a team that just lost its midfield anchor and might lose another, getting this deal done fast would make a lot of sense. Newcastle has the money. Now it’s just about whether they want to spend it on a guy another club just walked away from.
