The World Cup stage has a way of making midseason transfer targets a whole lot more expensive. Just ask Manchester United, who are watching another young midfielder raise his price tag with every goal in North America.
Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi has been one of the breakout stories of the tournament. The 20-year-old SC Freiburg star has three goals and two assists so far, playing both as a central midfielder and a support striker. His versatility is exactly what Michael Carrick wants — someone who can back up Benjamin Sesko up front while also helping in the middle of the park. But United might have to fight for him.
The Newcastle factor
According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle is currently in the driver’s seat for Manzambi. The Magpies have been discussing a deal for the Swiss international, though progress hasn’t been as fast as they’d hoped. Sources close to the situation say the numbers should not be a problem for Newcastle’s ownership. They’ve been told they’re at the front of the queue.
But here’s the thing: Newcastle thought the same thing about Munoz and that deal never materialized. So Man United still has a window.
United’s midfield mess
This isn’t a new problem for INEOS. They’ve already missed out on Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes because of costs. Their pursuit of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott could go the same way. Aurelien Tchouameni? Dream target, sure. But Chelsea is leading that race and Eduardo Camavinga might be headed to Manchester City instead.
Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille is another name on the list, but Lille’s asking price is steep. So a low-cost alternative makes sense. That’s where Manzambi comes in.
United have reportedly had interest in him for a while. INEOS has long admired his game. And his World Cup performances are not exactly helping keep things quiet. The kid is electric. He sees gaps other players don’t and he finishes well for someone who isn’t even a full-time striker yet.
At around £60 million, Freiburg is willing to sell. But the question is whether United moves now or waits. And waiting has not worked out well for them lately.
Carrick wants backup. That’s clear. Manzambi could solve two problems at once. But if United drags its feet the way it has with other targets, another quality option slips away. Newcastle is already in the conversation. The question is whether United forces its way back in.
