Mitchell Robinson has been a Celtic for about five minutes and he’s already trading barbs with the fanbase. That’s on brand for a guy who never really shuts up on social media.
The Celtics signed the 28-year-old center to a three-year, $47.4 million deal this week, adding another big body to a frontcourt that already needed some toughness. Robinson helped the Knicks win a championship last season and wasn’t exactly thrilled to leave New York. But the Knicks had cap problems, and Boston had money to spend.
So the Celtics did what teams do. They posted a welcome graphic on Instagram. The caption read, “Big Country’s coming to Boston. Welcome to the Celtics.” Cute enough.
Then a fan chimed in with something that apparently got under Robinson’s skin. The comment referenced the Celtics trading Jaylen Brown to the 76ers — a deal that brought back Paul George and some draft capital. The fan wrote, “I’m still not over the fact y’all traded JB for literally a bag of chips.”
It’s not totally clear whether the fan meant Robinson was the bag of chips. Robinson wasn’t part of that trade at all. But he took it personally anyway.
“Don’t get me started on you, fam,” Robinson replied.
The exchange was shared by Polymarket Hoops, and yeah, it’s already making the rounds.
Robinson isn’t new to online beef
This is not a guy who avoids keyboard wars. He’s posted about his hand injury during the NBA Finals against the Spurs. He’s shared political opinions that drew plenty of heat. He just does not care.
On the court, Robinson averaged 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in about 20 minutes a game last season. He shot 72 percent from the field. That’s not star numbers, but it’s a lot of production for a backup center. Boston will likely use him in the same role, backing up Neemias Queta.
So Robinson brings rim protection, some rebounding and apparently a willingness to fire back at randoms on Instagram. That last part might not matter much in the locker room. But it makes for a pretty good summer storyline.
