Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald let something slip this week. He got help breaking down the Patriots. Help from a person with a clear conflict of interest — someone Macdonald says he ‘probably can’t mention.’
Macdonald appeared on The Dan Patrick Show Thursday and confirmed he talked to John Harbaugh. The former Ravens coach now running the Giants gave Macdonald some general advice. But that’s not the interesting part.
“He was great,” Macdonald said of Harbaugh. “Probably can’t mention one guy that really helped us out that had some conflict of interest.”
Patrick immediately guessed Bill Belichick. Macdonald shot that down. It wasn’t the six-time Super Bowl winner. But someone else with serious Patriots ties.
Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk floated a name: Tom Brady.
“Brady, now an owner of the Raiders, was planning to hire Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to be the next head coach in Las Vegas,” Florio said. “Why wouldn’t Brady want to be bringing a Super Bowl winner to town?”
The theory makes some sense. Brady wants Kubiak in Las Vegas. Macdonald wants inside info on the Patriots. Maybe there was a trade there. Kubiak for Brady’s brain. Florio didn’t say that was confirmed. Neither did Macdonald. But the dots connect.
Brady hasn’t said anything publicly about giving Macdonald intel. Not a peep. And it’s not like the Seahawks are confirming anything either. But Macdonald didn’t deny it either. He just smiled and said he can’t name the guy.
Here’s the thing. Macdonald could become the first Seahawks coach to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Seattle already has two titles — one under Pete Carroll, one under Macdonald last season. Another win would put him in a class of his own in that franchise.
Training camp opens soon. The Seahawks are technically the hunted team now, defending champions and all. But if Macdonald really did get a secret playbook from Brady, maybe they’re the ones doing the hunting.
