The Brandon Aiyuk situation isn’t going anywhere. But the 49ers spent the first day of training camp acting like it barely mattered. That’s mostly because of Mike Evans.
The 6-foot-5 wideout showed up in San Jose and immediately started looking like Brock Purdy’s new favorite target. Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported Evans had two chunk-play catches from Purdy, including a deep ball down the left sideline that landed perfectly between cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and safety Marques Sigle. That kind of chemistry doesn’t usually show up on Day 1 with a new quarterback.
Evans won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in 2020. He’s gone over 1,000 yards every season of his career. That’s not a fluke. That’s a guy who knows how to get open and high-point a ball. For a 49ers offense that suddenly needs a new WR1, he might be exactly what they need right now.
Aiyuk still hasn’t reported to camp. He wants to play for Washington, partly because he’d get to reconnect with Jayden Daniels, his old Arizona State teammate who just won the Heisman at LSU. The 49ers haven’t traded him or cut him. But John Lynch basically said they want him to get what he wants, which in NFL GM speak means the release is probably coming.
Evans brings a different energy
The veteran wideout isn’t just running routes. He’s giving this offense a jolt that was missing with all the Aiyuk drama hanging over everything. Teammates are noticing. Purdy looked more comfortable throwing to him than most people expected this early.
Evans isn’t the fastest guy on the field at 31. But he doesn’t need to be. His frame, his hands, his ability to box out defenders — those things translate. The 49ers need someone who can win those contested catches downfield, and Evans has made a career out of that.
Fans at camp were buzzing about the connection. Social media lit up with clips of Evans snagging passes in 7-on-7 drills. It’s only one day of practice, but the vibe is completely different from where things stood a week ago.
The 49ers still have questions. They need to figure out who lines up opposite Evans. Jauan Jennings is solid. Danny Gray hasn’t broken out yet. But if Purdy and Evans keep clicking like this, the Aiyuk situation might end up being a footnote instead of a season-defining mess.
Lynch didn’t say much about Aiyuk on Sunday. Just that they wish him well. That’s the kind of language you use when you’ve already moved on mentally. Evans, meanwhile, was the story of Day 1, and that’s exactly what the 49ers needed.
