Michael Penix Jr. Might Miss Week 1 After Revealing His Recovery Timeline

Atlanta Falcons fans hoping to see rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. under center early in the season might need to pump the brakes. The first-round pick dropped a pretty telling update on his recovery timeline, and it doesn’t sound great for a Week 1 debut.

Penix is currently working his way back from something that’s kept him out of 11-on-11 drills. He’s been cleared for 7-on-7 work, but when asked about the next step, he didn’t exactly inspire confidence.

“I was told another four weeks possibly going into that next stage but at the same time it could be earlier,” Penix said.

That puts him on track for mid-to-late August at the earliest. And anyone who’s been around training camp knows that missing the full team reps until then usually means you’re not starting Week 1. The Falcons have been careful with him, and that caution seems to be the plan.

Atlanta’s quarterback room already had questions coming into camp. Kirk Cousins is the presumed starter after signing that big deal, so Penix wasn’t expected to take over immediately anyway. But there was some chatter that Penix might push for playing time if he looked sharp early. This timeline pretty much kills that idea.

The Falcons haven’t officially ruled him out for Week 1 yet. But the math is simple. If he’s not cleared for full team drills until late August, he’d have maybe one or two weeks of practice before the season opener. Coaches don’t typically hand the keys to a rookie under those circumstances.

There’s also the Tua Tagovailoa situation to note — though that name is clearly a mistake in the original report, since Tua plays for Miami. What the Falcons actually have is a veteran starter in Cousins who’s healthy and a rookie who’s going to need time. That’s not the worst problem to have, but it does mean the Penix era in Atlanta officially starts later than some fans hoped.

Penix sounded okay with the timeline, by the way. He didn’t push back or sound frustrated. He said it could be earlier. But four weeks is four weeks, and training camp doesn’t wait for anyone.

The Falcons open their season on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barring something unexpected, don’t expect to see Penix taking snaps that day.
