For a few hours on Tuesday, the internet was absolutely certain LeBron James was going back to Miami. The Miami Heat posted a scheduled video on YouTube for what appeared to be a LeBron James press conference. The date was set. The planets, according to some very serious people on social media, had aligned.
Turns out it was just a mistake. The Heat said their digital team was preparing for the possibility of James returning in free agency. Nothing more. But fans weren’t buying it. They pointed to the specific date as proof the four-time MVP had already made his choice.
Then NBACentral noticed something else. The Heat are hiring a Director of YouTube Strategy. The job posting went up on July 1, before the video gaffe happened. But that didn’t stop the jokes.
“Nah, they fired the dude who leaked it so damn fast,” one fan wrote.
“Pat woke up pissed, LMAO,” another added.
The timing was too perfect. Someone joked that Bronny James should apply. Another fan said whoever made that video probably messed up so badly their bosses can’t even think straight right now.
Why This Actually Matters
The Heat are legitimately pursuing LeBron in free agency. And they just added Giannis Antetokounmpo, which is about as strong a recruiting pitch as you can make. LeBron has history in Miami, two rings from 2012 and 2013, and a comfort level with the organization. The video error was accidental, but the intent behind it is real.
If LeBron doesn’t pick a team and decides to retire instead, maybe he could apply for that YouTube job. He’s got 23 years of work experience, he’s a fast learner, and he’s been a pretty good teammate. Not bad qualifications for a social media director.
But for now, the Heat’s digital team is probably just hoping no one schedules another video by accident anytime soon.
