Max Allegri is officially Napoli’s head coach. It took a while. Longer than anyone expected, really. But the deal is done now, and the 58-year-old Italian tactician has signed through June 2029.
Napoli made it official this morning with a statement that basically read like Allegri’s greatest hits album. They listed his whole career: playing for Napoli back in 1997-98, then coaching stints at Sassuolo (where he got them promoted to Serie B for the first time), Cagliari (where he won the Panchina d’Oro), Milan (won the Scudetto, the 18th in club history), and Juventus (five straight league titles, four Coppa Italias in a row, two Champions League finals). Oh, and he won another Coppa Italia with Juve in 2024. Then last season he was back at Milan, finishing fifth. Not exactly a highlight reel finish.
How This Thing Finally Got Done
Allegri got sacked by Milan the day after they blew fourth place and missed Champions League qualification. That was over a month ago. He and a bunch of front office guys — director of sport Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada, CEO Giorgio Furlani — were all shown the door in a full San Siro housecleaning.
He quickly agreed in principle with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to replace Antonio Conte, who left after two seasons that included a Scudetto and a Supercoppa Italiana. But getting Milan to actually tear up his contract took weeks of negotiations. The Rossoneri were in the middle of their own management overhaul, and things moved slow.
Now it’s done. Allegri is free to coach again. Napoli gets a guy who has won everywhere he’s been. Almost everywhere. Last season at Milan was a mess.
What Napoli Is Getting
Allegri is known for being pragmatic, sometimes to a fault. His teams are organized, hard to beat, and they win trophies. But he’s also had stretches where the football is boring and the players tune him out. At Juventus, the second time around, things got stale. At Milan last season, they were straight-up bad down the stretch.
Still, De Laurentiis is betting on the guy with six Serie A titles and five Coppa Italias. Napoli fans are probably split — some remember his playing days and respect the resume, others are wondering if his style fits a club that just won the league under Conte playing more attacking football.
Allegri has a three-year deal. The pressure is on from Day One.
