The Dallas Mavericks are pretty clearly the frontrunner to acquire Detroit Pistons guard Marcus Sasser. But they’re going to have to wait a week to make it official.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported Wednesday that the expected trade can’t go through until July 6. That’s when the league calendar allows certain deals to be finalized, and this one appears to be pending those procedural dates.
Sasser, a 25-year-old guard who went 25th overall in the 2023 draft, averaged 5.2 points and 2.0 assists last season while shooting 41.5% from three. Not eye-popping numbers, but context matters. He was buried on a Detroit roster that never quite figured out its guard rotation. The potential is there as a floor spacer, and Dallas thinks they can unlock more.
Stein doubled down on the reporting in his latest column, saying the Mavericks have emerged as the leading suitor — maybe even the only serious one — for Sasser. The deal would use a trade exception to absorb Sasser’s $5.2 million salary, giving Detroit extra financial flexibility while they continue reshuffling their roster in free agency.
For the Pistons, this is about cap room. They’ve already added Isaiah Joe to boost their backcourt, and they’re still hunting for frontcourt help. Moving Sasser would clear space and give them more options as they try to build something resembling a coherent roster around Cade Cunningham.
For Dallas, it’s about adding a young, cheap guard who can shoot and has room to grow. Sasser is from the area, so there’s a hometown angle here too. The Mavericks have been busy this offseason under new president Masai Ujiri, who’s trying to put together a competitive team around rookie cornerstone Cooper Flagg. Sasser wouldn’t be the headline move, but he’s the kind of low-risk, medium-upside add that smart rosters are built on.

One thing that’s worth watching: Sasser’s role. In Detroit, he never got consistent minutes. The Mavericks are thinner in the backcourt and could offer him a real rotation spot. If his shooting translates with more opportunity, this could look like a steal in a few months.
For now, everyone waits until July 6. Then we’ll see if this thing actually goes through or if some other team swoops in late. But the signals are pointing one direction.
