Manchester United is about to get an unexpected check from a player who hasn’t worn their jersey in years. Mason Greenwood is closing in on a move to Fenerbahce, and thanks to a shrewd sell-on clause United negotiated when they sold him to Marseille last year, the club stands to collect roughly €5 million ($4.3 million) from the transfer.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Fenerbahce has agreed to pay Marseille around €45 million ($38.9 million) for Greenwood. Personal terms are already in place, with the forward expected to sign a four-year contract in Turkey. That price tag is a significant jump from the €26.5 million Marseille paid United in 2025, which triggers the clause.
When United sold Greenwood, they negotiated a sell-on clause worth close to 50% of any profit from a future sale. Since Fenerbahce’s offer more than covers Marseille’s original investment, United’s cut is substantial. The money isn’t life-changing for a club of United’s size, but it gives Michael Carrick a little extra breathing room in the summer budget as he continues reshaping the squad.
Greenwood’s path to this point has been anything but straightforward. He was once viewed as one of the most naturally gifted finishers to come through United’s academy. But his arrest and suspension in early 2022 derailed everything. Criminal charges were later dropped, but the public scrutiny and internal review made a return to Old Trafford impossible.
He rebuilt his career on loan at Getafe, then earned a permanent move to Marseille. Now he’s headed to Istanbul, where Fenerbahce sees him as a marquee signing. For United, it’s a clean piece of business: they get a financial benefit from a player who was never going to play for them again.
Fenerbahce beat out interest from Tottenham and Roma to land Greenwood. The deal is expected to close in the coming days.
