Mark Sanchez’s criminal trial just got pushed back to September 8, 2026. That’s the fifth delay in a case stemming from an October 2025 incident where the former NFL quarterback and ex-FOX Sports analyst ended up stabbed and facing felony battery charges. The trial was originally slated for December 2025. It then shifted to March, then April, then May, then July, and now September — one day before the 2026 NFL regular season kicks off.
The charges come from a bizarre altercation early on October 4, 2025 in downtown Indianapolis. Sanchez was in town to call the Raiders-Colts game for FOX when things went sideways outside the Westin Hotel. According to prosecutors, the trouble started over a parking dispute with Perry Tole, a 69-year-old truck driver who was collecting used cooking oil from a nearby restaurant.
Surveillance footage and witness statements paint a chaotic scene. Sanchez approached Tole, followed him as he tried to walk away, and ended up throwing him against a wall near a dumpster. Tole told investigators Sanchez smelled like alcohol, was slurring his words, and blocked him from grabbing his phone before shoving him. When pepper spray didn’t stop Sanchez, Tole said he feared for his life and stabbed him multiple times. Authorities later determined it was self-defense.
Sanchez took several stab wounds to his upper torso. He spent about a week in the hospital, initially listed in critical condition before stabilizing. After he was discharged on October 12, police took him straight to the Marion County Jail. Sanchez reportedly told cops he didn’t remember the incident.
Prosecutors initially hit him with three misdemeanors but later upgraded one charge to a Level 5 felony for battery resulting in serious bodily injury. If convicted on that count, Sanchez faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The fallout was immediate professionally. Brady Quinn replaced Sanchez on FOX’s broadcast team the same week. The network later cut ties with Sanchez entirely and gave the permanent job to Drew Brees.
Separately, Tole has filed a civil lawsuit against Sanchez, FOX, and the company that owns St. Elmo’s restaurant. Unless there’s another delay or a plea deal, Sanchez’s criminal trial starts September 8, 2026.
