Marcus Rashford’s summer keeps getting worse. Barcelona passed on signing him permanently despite 14 goals and 14 assists last season. Instead they spent big on Anthony Gordon. Then Thomas Tuchel trusted Gordon over Rashford for England at this World Cup.
Now Rashford heads back to Manchester United with no clear path forward. He left Old Trafford at the start of 2025 after the relationship with the club fell apart. But according to Fabrizio Romano, the 28-year-old is coming back for preseason at least.
Rashford has told United he’s available for training. Romano said he’ll start preseason with the club and if an offer comes in, both sides will consider it. Direct talks with manager Michael Carrick are expected after the World Cup ends.
A Goalscorer Without a Home
Erik ten Hag once called Rashford unstoppable. This World Cup he has one goal in four appearances in North America. Not bad. Not what you’d expect from a player who was United’s brightest star during Ten Hag’s first season, either.
United’s preference according to The Guardian is to shed his wages. Rashford pulls in about £17.5 million a year. That’s a lot for a player with a lack of suitors. The market just hasn’t materialized for him.
Meanwhile United wants to upgrade their left flank. They’ve shown strong interest in West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville. Ben Jacobs reported this month that talks are open between the clubs. But any move for Summerville or another attacker reportedly depends on moving Rashford first.
What Comes Next
Rashford turns 29 soon. He’s not old but he’s not young either. If Carrick and the new setup want him around, fine. If not, they need someone to bite on that contract. Right now nobody is rushing.
The guy who carried United through the post-Ferguson years might just be stuck in limbo. A club that doesn’t quite want him and a market that hasn’t shown up. We’ll see how those talks with Carrick go.
For now Rashford reports for preseason. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.
