Manchester United have done some business this summer. Three new faces are through the door. But the real question hanging over Old Trafford right now isn’t about who’s coming in. It’s about whether one of their most expensive assets is ever going to play for the club again.
Marcus Rashford is still a Manchester United player. Technically. After a loan spell at Barcelona that didn’t turn into a permanent move — the Catalans decided not to trigger his £26 million buy option — the 28-year-old is expected to show up for preseason now that England’s World Cup run is over. United made it clear to Barcelona they weren’t interested in another loan, so that door is shut.
The problem is nobody seems to know what to do with him.
Rashford’s wages are massive. That’s been a sticking point all summer. Bayern Munich reportedly walked away from a potential deal largely because of the financial commitment involved. United are eager to get his salary off the books, but that’s easier said than done when you’re talking about a player who’s been as inconsistent as Rashford over the last few seasons.
Enter Michael Carrick with an olive branch
New United boss Michael Carrick hasn’t written off his former teammate yet. In fact, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, Carrick is genuinely looking forward to working with Rashford again. He wants to see the attitude up close, gauge where Rashford’s head is at, and then make a call.
“Marcus Rashford is not considering a move to Turkey at this stage of his career. Michael Carrick is looking forward to working with Marcus Rashford,” Romano said. “He wants to see Rashford, see his attitude, feelings and then decide whether he’s going to stay or leave the club.”
That’s about as direct as you’ll get from a rumor guy. Rashford to Fenerbahce has been floating around as chatter, but Romano poured cold water on that one. Turkey doesn’t seem to be on the table.
So what happens now? Rashford comes back to Carrington. Carrick watches him train. Maybe he plays a few preseason friendlies. If the old problems creep back — the body language stuff, the disappearing acts, the moments where he looks like he’d rather be anywhere else — then yeah, he’s probably out. If Carrick sees something different, maybe there’s a path forward.
It’s worth remembering things ended badly under Ruben Amorim. There was friction. A clean breakup might still be the best outcome for both sides. But United are short on funds this summer, and if keeping Rashford means they don’t have to go out and sign a replacement like Crysencio Summerville, that’s real money saved.
The flip side of that logic is ugly though. If United decide to keep Rashford, they might need to move someone else to balance the books. Noussair Mazraoui has been linked with AC Milan. Lisandro Martinez is on Atletico Madrid’s radar. Carrick could end up having to choose between giving Rashford another shot and keeping a defender he actually trusts.
For now, preseason is the deadline. Carrick will watch. He’ll decide. And then everyone will finally know what’s next for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United.
