Marcus Rashford Won’t Join Tottenham. Here’s Where He Actually Wants to Play.

Marcus Rashford is coming back to Manchester United this summer. But that doesn’t mean he’s planning to stay.

The England star spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he was earning a massive £375,000 a week. Barcelona had a £26 million option to buy him permanently, but they passed. Instead they spent £70 million on Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, which basically closed the door on Rashford returning to Spain.

So now what?

According to The Athletic, Rashford has zero interest in playing for another Premier League club. Not Tottenham, not anyone else. If he leaves United — and it still looks like he will — he wants to go abroad. That’s it. That’s the only move he’s considering right now.

Tottenham has been linked with him. The Sun reports they’re willing to cover his wages. But Rashford isn’t biting. He doesn’t want to face United as an opponent in England. He doesn’t want to be a rival. He wants a fresh start in a different country.

United’s Problem: No Buyer at the Right Level

Here’s the tricky part for Manchester United. They’ve already done two loans with Rashford — one to Aston Villa a couple years back, then the Barcelona stint — and they don’t want a third. They’d prefer to sell him outright. But the clubs that can afford his wages aren’t calling, and the ones that are calling aren’t the kind of clubs Rashford wants to join.

United are reportedly in no hurry to force a decision. The door isn’t completely shut on Rashford staying and being reintegrated into the squad. His contract situation and the club’s own planning might make that complicated, but it’s not off the table.

Starting July 1, United will be back on the hook for that £375,000-a-week salary. That’s a lot of money for a player who might not even be in the manager’s plans.

Harry Maguire Still Believes

Former United teammate Harry Maguire spoke about Rashford on The Rest is Football podcast. He didn’t give any inside info about the transfer situation, but he made it clear he still thinks Rashford has something to offer.

“I have an amazing relationship with Marcus and have had great times with him over the years,” Maguire said. “I know what a wonderful player he can be. It’s up to the club and Marcus to find a mutual agreement. Of course, if Marcus does come back, we want him to play and be happy and confident. It needs to be right for himself, it needs to be right for the club. But everyone knows what a great player Marcus can be for whatever club he plays for next season.”

That last bit is the key. Maguire essentially said Rashford can still be great — just maybe not at United.

Rashford is currently away with England at the World Cup. When he gets back, the real work begins. United needs to find a buyer. Rashford needs to find a club that fits. And right now, that club almost certainly isn’t in England.
