Manchester United’s Midfield Rebuild Has a New Name — and the Price Tag Will Shock You

The summer transfer window is barely open, and Manchester United have already sent a message: Michael Carrick is reshaping this midfield in his own image. The club locked up Atalanta’s Ederson in a deal that raised eyebrows across Europe. But according to multiple reports, they’re not done yet.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel that United have entered active negotiations for Sporting CP midfielder Mateus Fernandes — one of the most sought-after young talents on the market right now. “The contacts are going to continue in the next hours and days for Mateus Fernandes,” Romano said. “Man Utd are there. Man Utd want to get the player, and are in direct contact with the player’s camp.”

Fernandes, 22, has drawn comparisons to the modern box-to-box archetype — comfortable on the ball, aggressive without it, and capable of dictating tempo from deep. For a United side that struggled with transition balance last season, pairing him with Ederson could give Carrick the kind of midfield spine he himself once anchored at Old Trafford.

The club has not confirmed a formal bid, but Romano insists that Fernandes is “very keen” on the move. With PSG and Real Madrid reportedly circling as well, United appear to be moving quickly to secure the player before the bidding war escalates. The potential fee, however, is the real headline. West Ham, who hold a sell-on clause from Fernandes’ move to Sporting, are reportedly holding out for a figure close to £80 million. That would make him one of the most expensive midfielders in Premier League history — and a clear statement of intent from United’s hierarchy.

Why Fernandes fits Carrick’s vision

Carrick has quietly overhauled United’s approach since taking over. Gone is the passive, reactive style. In its place, a more structured press and a reliance on midfielders who can both win the ball and play through pressure. Ederson brings the aggression; Fernandes brings the composure. If United land both, they’ll have a partnership that looks ready to compete at the highest level.

Still, questions linger. Can a player with just one full season of top-flight football in Portugal justify an £80 million price tag? And can United close the deal before PSG or Real Madrid swoop in with even deeper pockets? For now, Carrick’s team seem confident — but in this market, confidence rarely lasts long.
