Manchester United have reportedly turned up the heat on their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, with talks now underway for a deal that could land the 22-year-old at Old Trafford. This comes after a summer window that’s seen the Red Devils move fast on some targets and get priced out of others.
According to the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan, negotiations are progressing. Chelsea is asking for around $50 million — they’ve been open to letting Santos leave if the price is right, given he’s not considered a guaranteed starter in Enzo Maresca’s system. The Brazilian made 43 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring three goals, but apparently that wasn’t enough to lock down a regular spot.
Santos himself wants more playing time, and United can offer that. Erik ten Hag’s midfield rebuild has been a priority since they finished third last year and secured Champions League football again. They already moved quickly to snag Ederson from Atalanta, and that deal should be announced soon now that Brazil’s World Cup run is done.
But it hasn’t all gone smoothly. United looked at Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, only to back off when the price tags got too rich. Anderson ended up at Manchester City, while Fernandes went to Tottenham. So Santos has become the pivot point for a midfield that still needs depth.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein first reported United’s interest over the weekend. Now Keegan says a deal is “edging closer” and that formal talks are happening. Whether $50 million is fair value remains the question. United have been cautious about overpaying this summer after getting burned in previous windows, but Santos is young, already has Premier League experience, and fits the profile of a player who could grow into a starter.
It’s not a done deal yet. But the fact that negotiations are this far along suggests United see something worth chasing. Santos isn’t a superstar name, but he’s the kind of buy that could make sense if the price comes down a little. Or if Chelsea holds firm, United will have to decide how badly they want him.
Either way, this one’s moving fast.
