Manchester United’s interest in Aurelien Tchouameni is real. It’s been real for a while. But according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, turning that interest into an actual deal is looking like a long shot for two very specific reasons.
Romano broke it down on his YouTube channel. The first problem? Real Madrid. The Spanish club hasn’t opened the door for Tchouameni to leave. At all. They still see him as a key piece for both right now and the future. So even if United come calling with a big check, Madrid isn’t exactly listening.
The second problem is money. Tchouameni is on a massive salary at the Bernabeu. And Manchester United? They weren’t planning on matching it. Romano made clear that fitting that wage into United’s current structure just isn’t part of the plan.
This is the same Tchouameni who United reportedly view as a dream signing. A perfect fit for that defensive midfield spot. Especially after Casemiro’s form dropped off. The club’s co-owners at INEOS are looking to add another midfielder this summer, and they’ve already got a deal done with Atalanta for Ederson Silva. But Tchouameni has been on the radar longer than most.
There was that training ground dust-up between Tchouameni and Federico Valverde back in May that got people talking. Romano mentioned on the Here We Go podcast that United’s interest was real even before that incident. But he also warned fans not to read too much into it. A fight doesn’t mean a transfer is coming.
United’s midfield wishlist is pretty long this summer. Mateus Fernandes is reportedly the top target, though West Ham wants around £80 million for him. Sandro Tonali at Newcastle and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are also on the list. But Tchouameni has always been the name that gets people excited internally.
Liverpool is also keeping an eye on the French international. And it makes sense. He’s the only pure senior defensive midfielder in Madrid’s current squad. That alone should tell you why Los Blancos aren’t eager to let him walk.
So where does that leave United? They love the player. They think he’s one of the best in the world at his position. But loving a guy and actually signing him are two different things when the selling club won’t negotiate and the wages don’t fit. Romano summed it up pretty plainly: United dream about Tchouameni. But dreams don’t always turn into transfers.
For now, it’s a waiting game. Real Madrid could change their stance later in the window. Or they might not. And United will have to decide whether they’re willing to adjust their salary structure for one player. Right now, the answer seems to be no.
