Man United Jump the Line on Mateus Fernandes After Spurs Nearly Stole Him

Manchester United just pulled off a quiet but important move in their summer midfield rebuild.

According to multiple reports, the club has agreed to personal terms with Mateus Fernandes, the West Ham midfielder who had suddenly become the subject of a late push from Tottenham. United had been the frontrunner for months, but Spurs made serious noise this week and looked close to getting a deal done. Then United stepped back in.

Fernandes has been United’s priority target for weeks. The Portuguese international fits what Michael Carrick wants in the middle of the park: he’s technical, comfortable under pressure and capable of playing both as a deep-lying playmaker and further forward. INEOS has been clear that midfield reinforcements are the priority this summer, and Ederson is already locked in from Atalanta. Fernandes would be number two.

So what’s the holdup?

West Ham. Always West Ham.

The Hammers are holding out for a fee north of £80 million. United are working toward something closer to £65 million plus add-ons, which feels like the real number that eventually gets this done. Fernandes wants the move. His camp has been in regular contact with United for weeks. The personal terms piece is done, which usually means the player side is ready. Now it’s just a matter of whether West Ham budge or hold firm into August.

Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have all poked around at various points. But Fernandes made it clear he wanted Old Trafford, and that narrowed the field considerably.

Tottenham’s sudden interest this week was the wild card. They got close enough to Fernandes’s representatives that a few outlets reported a deal was nearly done. But United’s existing relationship with the player’s camp gave them enough runway to match whatever Spurs offered on wages and convince Fernandes to wait.

This is a test of how quickly INEOS can move when another club tries to hijack their business. So far, so good.

The next few weeks will tell us whether United can get West Ham to compromise on the fee. If they can, Fernandes becomes signing number two of the summer and Carrick gets another option in a midfield that needed a refresh badly last season. If not, this one could drag into August and get messy.
