Magic Johnson Names the Raptors a Real Threat. But There’s a Catch With Kawhi.

The Eastern Conference is a mess this year in the best way possible. And Magic Johnson is paying attention.

The Lakers legend took to X this week to lay out just how loaded the East looks right now. He threw in the Toronto Raptors as a legitimate contender. But he added a pretty big asterisk: the Kawhi Leonard trade has to actually go through.

“Both the Eastern and Western Conferences are stacked,” Johnson wrote. “Halliburton is coming back from the Pacers and they’ll be a great team once again. Giannis is now in Miami, the Pistons will still be a strong team again along with the Cavaliers. And if the trade goes through and Kawhi ends up in Toronto, the East is loaded.”

He didn’t even mention Boston or Philadelphia. That alone tells you how deep things are. The Celtics lost Jaylen Brown this offseason, but they’re still a disciplined, well-coached squad with elite talent. Meanwhile, Philly swapped an aging Paul George for Brown and then added LeBron James on top of it. That’s not a rebuild. That’s a reload.

For the Raptors, it all comes down to Leonard. If he lands in Toronto, they become one of the scariest teams in the conference. Leonard just finished one of his best seasons: 27.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game, shooting over 50 percent from the floor. He also played 65 games, which is a big deal for a guy who’s had his share of injury trouble in recent years.

But here’s the problem. The league is investigating whether the Raptors tried to skirt salary-cap rules to make this thing happen. According to multiple reports, the NBA is looking into whether Toronto and Leonard’s camp had improper conversations before the trade was officially allowed. If the investigation finds violations, the trade could be voided entirely.

That would leave Toronto in a weird spot. They’d still have a solid roster, but without Leonard they’re not in the same conversation as the Sixers or the Celtics. And the East is too deep now to survive a swing-and-miss on a move this big.

The Raptors haven’t commented publicly on the investigation. Neither has Leonard’s camp. But the league is expected to wrap things up before the season starts. So for now, Toronto is stuck waiting.
