EA Sports finally gave hockey fans a reason to mark their calendars. NHL 27 is coming September 11, 2026, and for the first time in a while, the game has some genuinely new stuff worth talking about.
But the headline grabber is the cover. San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini is on it, and at 19 years old, he’s the youngest player in NHL history to get that honor. That’s not nothing. The kid hasn’t even played a full season yet, and EA is betting he’s the face of the franchise going forward. Feels right.
Connected Franchise Is Finally Here
The big gameplay addition this year is Connected Franchise mode. You can run an online league with up to 32 human players. That’s the whole league, every team run by a real person. EA says it’ll have flexible scheduling and the same roster management tools you get in offline franchise mode. That’s a lot of moving parts, but if it works, this could be the mode that keeps people playing all year.
No confirmation yet on cross-play for that mode, so keep your fingers crossed.
Presentation Upgrades and a New Commentary Team
EA is also pushing the presentation side. Every arena now has elements that match the real team’s identity — actual goal songs, customized visuals, that kind of thing. There’s a dynamic crowd system too, so the energy in the building is supposed to shift depending on what’s happening on the ice. Whether that actually feels different or just looks different in a trailer remains to be seen.
John Buccigross and Darren Pang are taking over the commentary booth. That’s a fresh pairing. Buccigross has been doing college hockey and NHL broadcasts for years, and Pang brings that goalie-turned-analyst energy. They’re also revamping the broadcast package around them, so the whole game broadcast should look and sound different from previous years.
Pre-Order Details and Versions
Two editions are up for pre-order right now on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The Standard Edition runs $69.99 and comes with 500 NHL points, a HUT player pack, and a WOC 2XP boost. The Deluxe Edition is $99.99 and includes seven days of early access starting September 4, 4,600 NHL points, a handful of HUT packs (Player, Icon Choice, Heroes Choice, Fan Choice), double XP tokens, and some Macklin Celebrini limited loadout gear. If you’re a HUT grinder, the Deluxe Edition probably pays for itself in points alone.
