Luka Doncic Told the Lakers He Needs a Real Center. Now Two Names Are on the Board.

The Lakers have bigger things to figure out this summer than just LeBron James’s next contract or whether Austin Reaves gets paid. Luka Doncic already made his preference clear: get him an actual center. Not a stretch four pretending to play the five. A real one.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers have done their homework on two restricted free agents who fit that description. Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons and Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz. Both are young. Both are traditional bigs who protect the rim and finish around it. Both would check the box on what Doncic wants.

The Lakers have been eyeing Duren since last season’s trade deadline, right after they landed Doncic. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that the team wanted to pair Luka with a top-tier center even then. Duren has improved since. He’s also looking for a max deal, and the Pistons appear ready to give it to him. Detroit could just extend him outright or let him test the market and match whatever comes in. Either way, it’s not obvious how the Lakers pry him loose.

Kessler is a different story. The Jazz offered him $140 million, but the two sides haven’t agreed on terms yet. There’s optimism in Utah that a deal gets done eventually. But if the Lakers can make things interesting, they might have a shot.

The Doncic Effect

This isn’t just about roster construction. It’s about the kind of leverage a player of Doncic’s caliber carries. He didn’t ask for a trade to L.A. to play small ball. He wants a lob threat who can deter shots on the other end. The Lakers front office knows that keeping him happy matters as much as keeping LeBron around.

Both Duren and Kessler are restricted free agents, meaning their current teams can match any offer. That’s a hurdle. But the Lakers have cap flexibility and enough trade assets to make a run if they choose to. The question is whether they want to commit the money and years to a center in a league that increasingly values perimeter versatility.

Doncic’s request is straightforward. Finding a way to get it done is not.
