Luka Doncic Has a Specific Wish List. Jalen Duren Might Check Every Box.

Luka Doncic didn’t mince words when a reporter from Drafteados asked him what he needs from the guys sharing the floor with him. The answer was direct and not exactly surprising for anyone who has watched him operate.

“I think mainly shooters and a big man who can run the pick-and-roll and jump, so I can pass to him,” Doncic said. “If I have shooters, they won’t double me as much, and it helps me out.”

It’s the kind of quote that makes you wonder which front offices were paying attention. And one name that fits that description perfectly is Jalen Duren, the 22-year-old Pistons center whose contract situation in Detroit has quietly become one of the more compelling storylines of the summer.

A Rising Star Who Hit a Wall in the Playoffs

Duren had a real breakout season. We’re talking 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a night, shooting 65 percent from the floor. That was good enough to earn him an All-Star nod and a spot on the All-NBA third team. For a guy his age, that’s serious company.

But the postseason was a different story. Against tougher defenses and tighter rotations, Duren averaged just 10.2 points and 8.5 boards, and his field goal percentage dropped to 51.4. The drop-off was noticeable. It also didn’t scare off teams who see the long-term potential.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Duren was not thrilled with Detroit’s initial contract offer. The gap between the two sides is reportedly significant, and a sign-and-trade is expected to be explored once that becomes possible. The Pistons can still keep him — he’s a restricted free agent — but the tension is real.

How Duren Fits the Doncic Blueprint

Doncic has made it clear that the Lakers need to build around him with shooters and an athletic big who can roll hard to the rim. Duren is exactly that kind of player. He’s a lob threat, a rim runner, and at 22 years old, his best basketball is probably still ahead of him.

There’s no indication yet that the Lakers are actively pursuing Duren. But the fact that he’s unhappy with his current situation and publicly considering his options is the kind of thing that makes general managers pay attention. A frontcourt pairing of Doncic and a young, explosive center like Duren would give L.A. something it hasn’t had in years.

Beyond the Lakers, any team looking to upgrade at center should be watching this situation closely. Duren’s regular-season production was too good to be a fluke, and the playoff struggles don’t erase what he showed over 82 games. He’s still a 22-year-old who averaged a double-double and shot 65 percent. That doesn’t grow on trees.

Free agency hasn’t even really started yet, but this is one of those storylines that could shake up the whole league if the right team makes the right move.
