Liverpool Pulled Out of the Mateus Fernandes Race — Here’s What Changed Their Mind

Manchester United’s aggressive push for Mateus Fernandes has sent shockwaves through the transfer market, forcing at least two major clubs to rethink their strategies. Liverpool, once viewed as a serious suitor, have now stepped away from the race entirely.

According to a report from Anfield Watch, the Reds had what they described as a “genuine interest” in signing the 21-year-old West Ham midfielder. Club scouts viewed Fernandes as a “serious prospect” with the potential to “develop into a star at Anfield.” But that interest hit a hard ceiling when West Ham slapped an £80 million price tag on the player.

Liverpool’s internal valuation was significantly lower. The club believed they could land Fernandes for a more modest fee — until Manchester United came calling. As the report explains, “Liverpool felt their valuation was realistic until the likes of United expressed a willingness to pay more, driving the asking price much higher.” Once the bidding floor rose, Liverpool walked away.

It’s a familiar story in modern soccer: a player caught between a club that wants him and a rival willing to pay a premium. For Liverpool, the math simply didn’t add up. They saw Fernandes as a missing piece — a midfielder who can consistently win the ball back, exactly the kind of player the squad lacked last season — but not at any cost.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also stepped back from the chase. Reports earlier this week indicated that the Spanish giants expect United to finalize a deal for Fernandes, so they’re not making a formal move. Arsenal, too, have cooled their interest. That leaves United as the front-runner by default, with West Ham hoping to spark a bidding war that hasn’t materialized.

United have opened talks with both West Ham and agent Jorge Mendes, though they remain cautious. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported that the club has no intention of paying “completely crazy money” for the 5-foot-10 midfield engine. Instead, negotiations are ongoing about restructuring the deal — lowering the upfront fee while adding performance-based add-ons.

West Ham’s relegation plays into United’s hands. The cash-strapped club needs to sell, and Fernandes is one of their few high-value assets. His known preference to join the Red Devils also strengthens United’s position. INEOS, United’s ownership group, sees an opportunity to secure a long-term midfield anchor without triggering a bidding war that would inflate the price further.

The next few weeks will be decisive. If United can structure a deal around £60-70 million with add-ons, Fernandes could be wearing red by the start of the season. For Liverpool and the other suitors who blinked first, it’s a reminder that in the transfer market, patience has a price tag — and sometimes it costs you the player you wanted most.
