Lille Puts a Loophole on Ayyoub Bouaddi That Could Complicate United’s Plans

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is getting messier by the day. The Mateus Fernandes deal with West Ham is dragging on, Tottenham jumped in late to offer more money, and now a promising alternative comes with strings attached you would not believe.

Ayyoub Bouaddi has been one of the breakout stories at the World Cup. The 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder is drawing serious interest from Manchester City, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and United. But here is the catch. Lille will only sell if the buying club loans him right back for another season.

That is according to journalist Fabrice Hawkins. Lille wants between 80 and 100 million euros for Bouaddi. That is roughly $84 million to $105 million at current rates. But they also want to keep the kid for one more year so he can keep developing at the club.

This creates a very real problem for United. Michael Carrick wants reinforcements this summer, not next summer. Loaning Bouaddi back to Lille would leave the Red Devils in the same spot they are in now: needing a midfielder who can actually play in 2026.

United was already priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali before turning to Fernandes. And now Spurs have swooped in on that deal too. So the backup options are getting thin and complicated fast.

PSG was reportedly in the mix but has moved on to other targets. That leaves the Premier League and Bayern as the remaining suitors. Lille has made it clear. Offers under about $63 million will not even get a conversation started.

Bouaddi is an exciting player. His vision, touch and composure at 18 are rare. He could be a star for a decade. But asking a club to pay top dollar and then wait a year for the player to arrive is a tough sell. United could try to sweeten the upfront fee to convince Lille to let him go now. But that seems unlikely given Lille’s stated position.

The price could also rise depending on how far Morocco goes in the World Cup. The deeper they go, the more eyes on Bouaddi and the higher the number gets.

This is the kind of situation that forces a club to decide between chasing a long-term talent and solving an immediate problem. United might have to pick one.
