Here’s the thing about the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes: it’s usually loud, public, and involves a lot of back-channel chatter that somehow ends up on ESPN. But this year, there’s one team that’s been working the phones quietly — and they might have a stronger pitch than anyone realizes.
The Denver Nuggets have emerged as a legitimate dark horse to land LeBron James, and according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the franchise has already contacted James’ representatives. The pitch isn’t just about money or market size. It’s about winning, which Amick reports is James’ top priority as he enters the twilight of his career.
“For starters, league sources close to James have made it very clear that the chance to truly contend — yes, for a title — is his top priority,” Amick wrote. “The Nuggets, who still employ one of the baddest big men in the history of the game in Nikola Jokić and an elite guard in Jamal Murray (who earned his first All-Star berth last season), check that box.”
Denver joins a list that includes Golden State, Cleveland, and Miami — familiar names in the LeBron rumor mill. But Denver isn’t just a curiosity here. They have Nikola Jokić, fresh off another MVP-level season, and Jamal Murray, who finally got his All-Star nod. That’s a core that could title-hop right now, not just two years from now.
The Kroenke connection
Amick also pointed to something that might matter more than roster construction: James has a real friendship with Nuggets team president and governor Josh Kroenke. They vacationed together back in 2016 after James beat the Warriors. In 2018, Kroenke gifted James a retro Nuggets jersey during a free agency pitch — one that ultimately failed when James chose the Lakers. But the relationship didn’t sour.
That personal tie, combined with the basketball fit, gives Denver an edge that most don’t see coming.
Golf, surprisingly, matters here
Amick even noted that James’ recent obsession with golf could factor in. Colorado ranks 10th in the country for golf, according to Golf.com, and the Denver area is loaded with courses. It’s not a primary reason to move, but if you’re weighing two similar offers and one comes with world-class mountain golf, it doesn’t hurt.
With Jokić still dominating and Murray playing at an All-Star level, the Nuggets offer something most teams can’t: a ready-made contender that doesn’t need LeBron to do everything. He could slide in, take some playmaking pressure off Murray, and let Jokić run the offense while LeBron picks his spots. It’s a weird fit on paper. But weird fits sometimes win rings.
Reports have not confirmed any formal offer from Denver, and James has not made any public statement about his intentions. But the foundation for something serious is there.
