The Minnesota Timberwolves are apparently shooting their shot with LeBron James. And they’re not being shy about it.
According to a report from The Athletic, the Timberwolves have been one of the most aggressive suitors in the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes. James can sign with any team he wants this offseason, and Minnesota knows it’s a long shot. But they’re pitching hard anyway.
The selling point? Pairing James with Anthony Edwards, plus a supporting cast that includes Jaden McDaniels, LaMelo Ball and Rudy Gobert. The Wolves have told James that he wouldn’t have to carry the offensive load by himself. And on defense, McDaniels and Gobert could take some of the pressure off a 40-year-old who’s logged more minutes than just about anyone in NBA history.
But the real argument is bigger than basketball. Minnesota hasn’t won a championship since 1991. That drought spans all four major men’s pro sports. The pitch, according to the report, is that winning a title in Minnesota would mean more than winning anywhere else. It would be historic. The kind of legacy move that separates you from every other all-time great who took the easy path.
That’s a hell of a sales pitch. Whether James buys it is another story.
Why Minnesota Is Even in the Conversation
Five years ago, the Timberwolves were a mess. They were the kind of franchise players avoided. Bad culture. Bad management. Bad luck. But they’ve rebuilt fast. Edwards is a superstar. The roster is deep. They’ve been one of the tougher teams in the Western Conference the last couple years. That alone got them in the room.
James is also considering the Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers. So yeah, the competition is stiff. Those teams all have recent championship pedigree or a clearer path to a ring.
But Minnesota has something the others don’t. A story. The chance to be the guy who ended a three-decade curse. That’s not nothing.
The Odds Are Still Long
Nobody thinks James is actually going to Minnesota. Vegas odds probably reflect that. But the fact that the Timberwolves are even being mentioned in the same sentence as LeBron James says something about how far the franchise has come. They’re not a punchline anymore. They’re a legitimate option.
Whether James takes that option seriously or just uses it as leverage, we’ll find out soon enough. Free agency doesn’t wait forever.
